What do people say about Hoonah ATV Tours?

My friend and I had an absolute blast touring beautiful Hoonah on UTV. Joe was very knowledgeable and led us right to some bears to see! Can’t wait to come back

Joe is a great guy to work with. Very thorough and patient to ensure people feel good about their experience. He even picked us up after our rental and drove us to the cruise terminal. Nice good local business.

Very fun riding ATV. Not hard for 60-year Olds. Great tour guide. Not a lot of look out points and vehicles were too loud to see bears. Still worth it. Good shopping and lunch areas near cruise boat pier.

Author: Jill Geiger | Date: 7/8/2026 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

Amazing adventure we had thanks to Joe and Hoonah ATV tours. 100% taken care of, ATV came with GPS, panic buttons, side nets, mirrors and anytime anywhere communication to Joe the owner (if activated). We ran through a dandelion field, saw eagles, saw a mama bear and two baby cub. I felt like I was living off the pages in a storybook. Every minute was worth it! Best way to support a local in Hoonah!

One of my best time seeing the wilderness. Joe was amazing we rented the atv on the spot and the journey was fabulous ‼️Seen bear with her cubs. Eagles and the nest, a beautiful field of flowers. Exciting and fun.A must see when traveling to Alaska.

We had a wonderful time renting this ATV. So nice to get away from our cruise ship crowd and venture out on our own! And, we saw bears!!A wonderful locally owned family business!!Consider supporting them!

We had a great time renting this machine on our own. It was so nice to get away from all the cruise crowds. Great folks, we highly recommend this local family owned business! And, we saw bears 🐻!!

Sooo cool. Saved the day for us on what would have otherwise been a pretty boring day off the cruise boat. Joe was super nice and helped us get started even though we hadn’t driven these kids of vehicles before.Saw bears, bald eagles and lots of nature (away from the crowds!!). Even met some nice people who offered to take us on their boat to go looking for bears and whales. Would do it again without question.

Great afternoon in Hoonah exploring the area. Joe had good suggestions for a ride and machines were good . GPS provided with bear spray ! )happily didn’t have to use !)

We had such a great day! What a wonderful way to see Hoonah! We booked our ATV tour with Joe well in advance of our cruise. Joe made the experience seamless. We saw a HUGE brown bear, black-tail deer and bald eagles. Dress warm. Wear your rain gear, if needed. Plan on having a blast!

Really great guys! They made our tour effortless and were very helpful.

A local guide told us about the yellow house in town. Hoonah ATV definitely have the best price in town. Joe’s team took very good care of us. Told us where to go and what to look out for. My family felt very safe the entire time. Super fun and easy. Definitely book with Hoonah and not the cruise ship!

Author: Simons Family | Date: 9/3/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

My family and I have been on numerous tours throughout the years and this is by far the best one we’ve ever done. The company is honest and transparent on costs. They’re extremely helpful with laying out the perfect route for you and provided everything you needed to have a great tour. I can’t recommend these guys enough. This is a must tour!

Author: Rick Solt | Date: 9/2/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

I spoke with Joe who gave me all the details on how to get to the shop from the ship terminal and helped me make the reservation. Jake set up the GPS to navigate the roads in the wild forest with a few stops to take a walk. In one of those short hikes, near a creek we even saw a bear that was snacking on salmon: the whole family loved the experience as it was easily the best memory of our trip!!

Author: paolo piagi | Date: 9/1/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

Fantastic experience! Joe was the nicest guy! Our ship canceled our tour, the only other one was full. I called Hoonah ATV tours and they told me to come on down, plenty of utv's to rent. We got a 4 seater, were self-guided and got to spot none one, but two bears! I would highly recommend. Great town, lovely people! Jack checked us in and was informative, kind and thorough.

Payton made the trip worth the money!! He deserves a raise. His story tell was both entertaining and educational.

Author: Brenda Coker | Date: 8/28/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

WOW! It was a beautiful way to explore nature safely and without all of the crowds. We saw a gorgeous brown bear fishing in the river, a deer running though the woods and they had us stop and a waterfall and a private beach. Thanks for the adventure with my family of 4. It was the best part of our 7 days in Alaska. Memories were made for a lifetime.

Author: Beverlee Harris | Date: 8/26/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

Excellent service with tremendous people. So friendly and helpful. It was a beautiful drive. No wildlife this trip, but that is how it goes! Still an excellent excursion

Author: Michael Hobbs | Date: 8/26/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

Our family of four walked from Icy Strait Point to Hoonah ATV during our cruise port visit. The reservation was lined up months in advance with Joe, who very thoroughly explained our options as we corresponded via email. When the day came, we were not disappointed. His partner, Jack, gave us very detailed instructions on operating the ATV. The GPS system really made following the map fool-proof. We did not see any bears but bumped into some other travelers that did. The beach trail that we chose was scenic. Our only regret was that we did not take the longer option to cover more trail.

We had a blast on our ATV tour. Peyton was our tour guide and he went above and beyond to make sure everyone had fun and was very informative when it came to the islands history and cool facts. Loved this excursion and highly recommend everyone do this excursion!

Author: Mitch Strack | Date: 8/20/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

Great experience. Nice guys running the place and Jack was outstanding. Good instructions and thank goodness for GPS! The cruise lines don’t make it easy to get to Hoonah. (Think Mahahual in relation to Costa Maya). The cruise lines want you in their shops or on their excursions. It’s worth the effort to get beyond the cruise port gates. Pricey but recommended for those wanting an adventure!

We didn’t rent ATVs but met Joe in Hoonah by chance. He gave us a ride from town back to the ship and provided a mini-tour along the way. He shared local knowledge, some great views, and samplings of different berries found growing near the road. Joe is salt of the Earth. Do yourself a favor and skip the lines at Icy point, head to Hoonah and support local businesses like Joe’s.

This locally owned group is top tier. The icy straight point area is pretty touristy until you get into the town of Hoonah. We were walking around looking for something to do and walked over to Joe’s place. Joe set us up with ATVs in just an hour and a half, and for a walk in, that’s awesome! We got lunch and headed right back. Prices were REMARKABLY better than the predatory ship pricing. Joe explained all the safety info and sent us on the self-guided tour. Joe then gave us a ride back to the port so we didn’t need to pay for the shuttle! 10/10 experience and HIGHLY recommend.

We stumbled across Hoonah ATV Tours by total luck — a little yellow house and a friendly welcome that led to one of the best adventures of our whole cruise. The guys running it were fantastic — super helpful, down-to-earth, and clearly knew so much about the area. They didn’t just hand us the keys and send us off — they took the time to talk with us, explain where to go, what to look for, and gave us a real sense of the land around us. Thanks to their guidance, we ended up spotting wild bears, including one catching salmon straight from the stream. It was something we’ll never forget. If you’re in Icy Strait Point and looking for something real, wild, and unforgettable — skip the polished cruise excursions and head to the yellow house. These guys will hook you up with an experience you’ll be talking about for years.

Even though the trail was a little tame and we didn’t spot a bear, the ATV ride with Hoonah was still a great experience—and definitely one of the better things to do in Icy Strait. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable, and the river views were beautiful. Icy Strait doesn’t offer much, so this activity was a great way to make the most of it. If your cruise stops here, skip the touristy shops and hop on an ATV instead. It was a fun, unique adventure and a great way to get off the beaten path for a bit.

We are a family of six, and we rented two ATVs when we arrived in Hoonah. It was FANTASTIC!!! We followed the GPS system and arrived at the bridge as promised - and within three minutes a bear came to the stream to splash around hunting salmon. We will never forget it!!! Incredible Alaskan Adventure - we cannot recommend it highly enough!

Friendly, very careful to make sure we understood the GPS and thoroughly completed a safety briefing. The utv was well cared for.

This was incredible! Jump on the shuttle at a straight or walk into Hoonah to the yellow house and you can rent an ATV. Each one comes with a GPS to take you through town and then onto the forest service roads toward the interior of the island where you can get to a river and see the salmon running and hopefully see bears. We ate some thimble berries (looks like raspberries) and salmon berries (orange or red) when we parked and saw the salmon running in the stream, a bear in the river, bear claws in the mud by the river and bear scat.

Author: MKB | Date: 8/2/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

Absolute gem to find in town, awesome guys who give great direction, ended up seeing a huge brown bear. Worth its wait in gold- if you’re on a cruise here, grab the shuttle into town instead of paying for the excursion off the boat. If I could give 10 stars I would.

These guys are great! We had 2 families with 8 people. We walked up and asked to rent a couple UTV's. They were booked for the next hour or so but asked us to return at noon. They were ready to go. We got a good explanation of the terrain, and how to drive the UTV. This included a GPS clearly marking the trail and turns. Plenty of room for 4 people. A really nice drive out on 1/3 tar, and 2/3 gravel (quite dusty, but expected for 4 wheeler) to a beautiful island. Salmon were jumping and Eagles were all around. When we got back, the line for the shuttle bus was over a block long. They volunteered to drive us to the gondola so we could easily make it back to our ship. Would definitely use them again. No worries about using these guys over the cruise ship excursion (especially for the price!)

Author: Steve Potter | Date: 7/28/2025 | Source: google | Rating: 5 stars

Great rental experience! Good communication, prompt and efficient with the rental, and great explanation of driving options and things to see on the island. We were treated to a drive back to the ship with a tour through town. I would recommend this excursion. One things to keep in mind, this business is about 2 miles from the ship dock. There is a shuttle but it doesn’t start operating til 9am and I’m not sure how often it runs. It was a pretty walk though.

We arrived in Icy strait looking for a reasonable ATV experience and we were directed to HOONAH AV TOURS. they are a must do so many trails you can chose from and they are self guided so if you want to turn off your path you can. You can experience all kind of wildlife scenary. The owner is very much involved and his staff is excellen. A must experience

This was so much fun!! Joe was very easy to coordinate with and couldn't have been more friendly. He gives you a GPS device and some suggested stopping points and then lets you loose in the forest. It was awesome to see parts of Alaska that a cruise tour would never show you. The best part was that it was just my wife and I, without another person for miles. This hands down beats any crowded tour that you would book through the cruise line. We will absolutely be back! The scenery could not have been more beautiful.

The Best ATV experience and such a better value than with the cruise ship. Real off-roading, drive down to an island and up about a 1,000ft through a magic mountain trail. Highly recommend!

Excellent ATV self guided tour experience . Joe and his team explained everything in details. We had a great experience with the family riding ATVs up in the forest. The people from early tour gave us the location where they spotted bear. So we were lucky enough to see bear around that location. Joe went out of his way to make our experience seamless, not only did we get an awesome ATV ride but he also gave us a ride back to our cruise ship definitely went above and beyond. If you are visiting Hoonah, I highly recommend you check this out!

We came all the way from Tasmania to another tiny island. It is the most amazing town. We were so fortunate to have come across Hoonah ATV Tours, located right next to the Shuttle Bus stop. We had so much fun, drove to Long Island, spotted some bear poop and watched dozens of salmon jumping. The Hoonah ATV Tour guys were so helpful and took all the hard work out of navigating. What a fantastic experience! Highly recommend

After being on a cruise ship with 4,000 plus strangers, this is exactly what we needed. A self guided ATV adventure through the woods of Alaska. Joe and his crew were very attentive and trustworthy, the GPS map they provided worked perfectly. The whole family enjoyed this experience very much. Highly recommend booking through the locals and NOT through the cruise line excursions. Save yourself some money and help out the locals. Thank you Joe!

Upon visiting Hoonah via a cruise ship, we were able to contact Joe at Hoonah ATV Tours and he set my family up with a 4 person ATV. Joe was very accommodating, providing us options on where to go and what to see. During our tour, we saw a bald eagle and a mother and cub bear. This tour was a highlight of our Alaskan cruise for my 14 and 17 your old children. I would highly recommend Joe and Hoonah ATV Tours, Thank you!!!

If kind actions are any indication of excellent service, then this company truly deserves praise!During our recent stop in Hoonah, we missed the bus back to our cruise ship. Although we had enough time to walk, one person in our group was struggling with a bad knee, making the walk a challenge. As we were passing by Joe’s ATV Tours, Joe was outside cleaning his ATVs. He overheard me comment on how fun they looked and offered a friendly hello along with his business card. Joe then asked if we would like a ride back to the cruise ship and generously offered to transport all of us in two trips. We were extremely grateful for Joe and his kindness. I don’t know if or when I’ll return to Hoonah, but if I do, I will certainly consider Hoonahatvtours. I’ve shared this story with at least ten people, including some who are planning an Alaskan cruise. Thank you, Joe!Jerry Welsch

We rented a side by side from Hoonah ATVs when our boat pulled into Icy Point Strait. Do yourself a favor…get a bag of donuts (delish) then walk down the street out of the cruise terminal area and rent one of these. We took the long tour, explored the area and didn’t see crowds for like 90 minutes. The scenery was amazing and we saw some black tailed deer. I messaged the owner direct and skipped cutting in the cruise line. He was great to work with and I liked supporting a small local business. The SXS was in great condition and he even had compressed air to blow off the dust! Plan on dust lol. 11/10 would recommend. Veteran owned business (he was Army but we didn’t hold that against him).

If you’re visiting Hoonah and want to experience more than just cruise port shops, Hoonah ATV Tours is an absolute must! From start to finish, this tour was hands-down one of the most scenic adventures of our entire Alaska trip. The equipment was top-notch and easy to handle, even over some of the more rugged terrain. The highlight? The ride takes you through dense Alaskan forest trails and ends at a breathtaking waterfront viewpoint that looks like something straight out of a postcard. Crystal-clear water, snow-capped mountains in the distance, and total serenity. We had time to take photos, enjoy the view, and just soak in the natural beauty. What I loved most was how well the tour balanced adventure and relaxation. It was exciting without ever feeling rushed or overly touristy. If you want to get off the beaten path and see a more authentic, wild side of Alaska, this is the tour to book. Worth every penny!

We had an unforgettable experience with Hoonah ATV Tours! The self-guided setup was perfect—it gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace while still feeling confident with the clear directions and support they provided.Riding through the rugged Alaskan wilderness was a thrill, and the scenery was absolutely breathtaking. One of the highlights was spotting several bald eagles along the way—such a majestic and surreal sight in their natural habitat. The trails were well-marked and took us through a variety of terrain, from coastal views to deep forest paths. It was the perfect way to connect with the wild beauty of Alaska and have a blast doing it. If you’re visiting Hoonah and want an authentic, adventurous experience, Hoonah ATV Tours is a must!

Joe was fantastic to work with—friendly, straightforward, and offered a great price for our adventure! The side-by-side was in excellent condition and made the experience even better. The trails were easy to navigate, but still tons of fun. Honestly, the best part was exploring on our own without a guide. The Garmin GPS provided was super easy to follow, and while we were given bear spray just in case, we never needed it 😛

Had a great time with their ATV’s seeing the Alaska wilderness! Easy to rent, awesome staff. Set us up w/ 2 GPS units (screen and emergency call). Had several GPS prepared routes preloaded, ready to go and easy to follow. Maximized fun time w/o being late for return. They even cleaned the Alaska dust off of us upon return! Perfect.

We had a great time on our ATV Tour in Hoonah. Communication was excellent and Joe was great. The machines were in great condition and we had perfect weather for scenery and animal observing. We only saw one bear, but it was a big one. We would definitely do this tour again when visiting Hoonah.

We highly recommend Hoonah ATV tours for anyone considering this! We looked at ATV excursions through our cruise line. What they offered looked like a follow the leader situation and so do the Jeep tours. I found a video of someone on that ATV excursion and it confirmed that it was in fact a boring follow the leader situation. Hoonah ATV Tours asks you what you would like to see, and they set up a GPS to take you there. You drive yourself and you can get out and walk around any time you choose. You have a set time you need to be back but can explore as you wish. We ran low on time and did not complete the route due to driving slower than we probably should have but we enjoyed it none the less. We ran late due to not realizing how far of a walk it would be from the cruise dock. They still honored our reservation and offered to come find us but by the time we got cell service we were close to their location. We appreciated that they offered though, and that they were extra helpful! We found out afterwards that there is a shuttle from the port to the town and back that the drop off is right next to Hoonah ATV Tours. Honnah ATV Tours took their time explaining everything and ensure you are comfortable before setting off. They provide bear spray and emergency location devices which helped us feel safe! We were not prepared and needed to buy water before we set off. They gave us extra time to go to the store and buy water. The ATV ran great, and we enjoyed the freedom and quietness of this excursion. We only came across one other ATV while out on our tour! This was very nice because after so many places being cramped with people from the cruise lines it was nice to be alone with nature. The areas to explore that they recommended were great and we saw plenty of wildlife out and about! We have dear in our hometown but coming across one on the tour was still a great sight too! We have another cruise planned in the future and will definitely do this excursion again, and possibly go longer if possible!

We had such a great time thanks to Joe! He was really chill and kind. Explained everything well and helped us pick the right path and package for our group without an ounce of “upselling” or any kind of pressure. The atv’s were so nice, in great shape and handled great. Thank you so much!

We didn’t have any plans when we arrived in Hoonah so we were excited to find the opportunity to rent a SxS. Luckily they had an open slot. While we didn’t see any bears we did see several bald eagles and got beautiful views of the water at low tide. The team is super nice, explained everything, no issues. If you’re going to spend money in Hoonah, do it exploring away from the crowds at the dock.

We'd give TEN stars if we could! Skip the corporate stuff at the port and take a stroll into town. Jack and Joe will make sure you have a terrific excursion. Their prices are reasonable, machines are in good repair, they give you a GPS and bear spray. If you do nothing else while you're in port, look these guys up and rent an ATV.

We booked the 4 person ATV during our recent visit to Hoonah/Icy Strait Point and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. While we hoped to see bears and didn’t, the staff did their best to send us on a route that would give us an opportunity. We had reservations and showed up late due to an unexpectedly long time to get from the cruise terminal to Hoonah (the shuttle took forever!), and the staff was completely flexible with us. The machines were clean and well-maintained. They clearly prioritize safety, even providing us with bear spray.

We hadn’t planned to rent an ATV but decided to at the last minute and it ended up being a highlight of our trip. Beautiful drive, saw a Grizzly Bear, lots of salmon and other wildlife. The perfect way to get out into the Alaska wilderness. Hoonah ATV tours was great. They were super easy to work with, set us up with GPS and everything we needed for a fun time. Definitely recommend the 2.5 hour drive - it’s worth having the extra time.

Was walking through town and came across Hoonah ATV Tours. My brother and I chose the longer tour and found it to be an amazing way to see Alaska, untethered from the usual, boring tour guide-style way to see the Alaskan wilderness. It felt completely safe as you got a GPS device which they track you with and you can ask for help, if needed. You also get bear spray if you decide to get out of the ATV and wander a little. They were super friendly and helpful with any of our needs or questions. And the best part? We saw two giant grizzly bears while we were outside our ATV taking in the sights - walked right past us. Definitely wasn't planned, but we felt completely safe. Highly recommend using them!

We stopped many places on our cruise but this was one of our favorites because of this tour! Seeing the mountains and wildlife up close was incredible, definitely recommend if you’re looking for something to do in the area.

We walked into town from the cruise ship at Icy Strait Point. We weren't planning on taking an excursion. But when we walked past this we'll kept building with a sign for ATV tours we had to do it. The price was much better than through the cruise line and we got to see the area on our own. The people were very helpful and friendly. We had an excellent experience.

We just took a cruise 8/3 - 8/10. We came across this business. I was a nervous wreck thinking about going miles into the woods looking for bears lol. Sadly we didn't see a bear but lots of poop! The tour people were great, I would suggest people bring water as it is very dusty. We went back to ship and shook out our clothes before we hit the showers lol. Had a blast. From New Hampshire we have mountains, but this place and the opportunity to explore in a side by side was amazing!

Great tour! If you want a self guided adventure this tour is highly recommended! Joe sets you up with a GPS and you're on your way to the back country. Wife and I did the 2.5 hr. and that was perfect. Bear walked right out in front of us so got some great pics. Saw thousands of salmon in a creek. Great scenery in the mountains. Machines are easy to handle and No experience needed. Beers at the brewery next door topped of a great day!

If you are on a cruise, don't use their ATV's. They are cheap and break. Use Hoonah ATV. Polaris machines in great running order. Excellent staff, reasonable prices, and good guidance for a self tour.

We just did the Hoonah ATV tour through Joe and his family run business in Hoonah, Alaska just off of the Icy Straights port. It was so fun. We saw bear and beautiful scenery. The machines were in great shape with complete GPS tracking. The area is very easy to navigate and the crew gives you great instructions. Joe knows your location in case you get lost but I cannot imagine that you would. We needed a ride back to our ship and he just gave us a ride rather than having to wait for the bus. We really enjoyed this and invited Joe to come ride with us in the Black Hills of SD. Hope he takes us up on it!

I am updating my review as my post was for the wrong tour operator. I mistook them for another company who I had an excursion with. I am giving this company 5 stars but I have not used them. The 5 stars is based on them responding to my review and setting me straight. This operator says that they do not provide tours through the cruise line. That alone should give them 5 stars. I say this because I have found that many of the operators that do provide tours through the cruise line in other ports of call are not always the best. My best experiences are with booking direct with tour operators and if I would have known about this company I would have booked with them directly. If I had I am confident I would have had a great experience.

Loved our ATV ride!! Pick up was right in the middle of town and easy to find, the GPS was loaded with directions and simple to follow and the drive and destination were stunning! The Best & Most Authentic experience in Icy Strait Point! We are Alaskans and recently rented one of their side-by-sides while visiting. I can not think of a more authentic experience while in Icy Strait Point. Chichagof Island has an extensive network of remote gravel roads dating back to the logging days. These well maintained roads take you through GORGEOUS scenery in an area teeming with wildlife. The trip is self guided so you can go at your own pace and the rigs come with bear spray and a GPS so you can’t get lost and the GPS’ have waypoints with notable stops. In just a couple hours, we had several up close brown bear views, one of which lasted quite a long time before in disappeared into the forest. In addition to the bears, we saw amazing scenery and lots of bald eagles. Hoonah & Sitka are known for the best whale watching, but if you want to avoid the crowds while in Icy Strait Point, you should seriously consider renting one of these 2 or 4 person side-by-sides from this locally owned & operated business for a truly authentic experience to see the REAL Hoonah!!

This is a must do experience in Hoonah. Joe is such a nice guy and we really enjoyed chatting with him before and after our hire. The ATVs are very well maintained, the provided GPS worked perfectly and having a can of bear spray handy in all of them is an important touch. Joe's local knowledge is fantastic and the route we were sent on was quiet and easy to follow. We saw loads of wildlife on our one hour trip. This was one of the best 'excursions' we did on our trip and if we come back to Hoonah we will definitely be back again.

This was the highlight of our trip. Joe provided an excellent service. The ATV was super new and clean. We picked up our ATV and Joe provided us with a MAP and GPS with lost of suggestions of where to go depending of what we wanted to see… and off we went to explore and discover. We saw brown bears, Alaskan marten bear, otters and dears crossing in front of us…. Tons of birds. The most amazing part of this tour is that we were not stuck in a tour with other ppl; we rented the ATV as you are renting a car, and you are free to go wherever you want and stay as much a you want within your rental period and rules. I strongly suggest renting for 2.5 hours. Thank you so much Joe for your services. H Family
